MY DOG GOT LOOSE

If your greyhound gets out of the yard, the house, or his leash, you will panic. Try to keep stress or fear out of your voice and call to him. Try not to chase him. You won't catch him! While he is loose, keep the following tried and true methods in mind. Then please continue to the remaining pages in this section that give very detailed instructions on what to do if your greyhound is lost.

  • Use your squawker. This can be heard over a long distance and will help lure your dog back.

  • Have someone get the car. Dogs love to ride in the car and may jump right in.

  • Direct him to a fenced area. Once he is in an enclosed area, you can get him back easily.

  • Show the dog his leash and say “Let's go for a walk!” He will often run right up to you so you can put the leash on him and take him for a walk.

  • If your dog runs up to a stranger, have them hold the dog for you.

  • Say “cookie” or “treat” to attract his attention.

  • Remember to love and squeeze your dog when you get him back. If you punish him, you may make him regret returning home. Remember, he is your best friend!
